The mascot that used to represent East High School is no longer representing East. To me that is a good thing because the mascot was highly offensive to compare East to the Indian/Native culture when we are nothing like them. I would be furious if someone was trying to compare my culture that is actually the complete opposite of my culture. It is also very stereotypical because it is pretty much showing everyone that is what all Indians look like which can be very offensive to natives that don’t look like that.
East High could have used something else that has to do with the word “scarlets” but since they didn’t they got a lot of the communities input on how it makes them feel. In 2010 the principle decided to get rid of the Indian logo because of how upset the community was so instead of an Indian head they decided to change it to a big “E” so no one would be offended but because of that we have no mascot at the games. So in my personal opinion this is kind of racist and it is wrong because they are displaying that, which is what all Natives and Indians look like which they are very wrong.
